Black Magic commercial, 1961
Ahhh, the days before texts, tweets and swipe right. A white convertible drives up to a large set of steps. A suave man in the car waves to a woman at the top of the steps. He runs up the steps and she runs down with a dog on a lead, they meet in the middle. The man gives the woman a box of Black Magic, they walk down the steps together. A Jack Lee song about the product runs through the commercial. Launched in 1933 and relaunched in 1947 as a gift box symbolic of romance and courtship, the Black Magic brand under Jeremy’s creative direction remained a textbook example of effective marketing.
